1969 Illinois High School State Track & Field Championships
From Jim Wehrheim:
The photos are from the 1969 Illinois High School State Track & Field Championships which were held at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois.
GBS had a great Mile Relay Team which competed in the Illinois state finals.
The first picture is our first runner John Maschoff handing off to Scott Sims.
The second picture is our third runner junior, Tom Brietzman is handing off to me for the anchor leg.
The third picture shows how we caught Glenbard West, Willowbrook, Oak Park and other schools from behind to win this race, which qualified us for the finals the following day.
The boys supporting us that day were fellow GBS students Hank Nelson, Gary Peterson, Jim Zalesny, Bruce Johnson, Phil Whiting and Glen Kaiser. The runner wearing sunglasses in the group photo was Junior Kevin Rielly who competed in the hurdles.
The last picture was taken just before the four of us ran for the very last time together at the Conference track meet. I loved my teammates. I was trying to grow a goatee at the time hoping I would look like the Olympic Sprinter, John Carlos.

Scott’s book review
I would like to recommend as an item of “nostalgia” the recent best selling non-fiction book Rocket Menby Robert Kurson. Its subject is the Apollo 8 flight, which circled the Moon in December of 1968. This was arguably the most dangerous undertaking in human history as it tested out technologies and procedures for the first time as NASA accelerated their flight schedule because of intelligence indicating the Soviet Union was planning a similar endeavor the same month. Kurson’s combines deep research of the complexities of the flight with the human story of the astronauts and their families who realistically faced the prospect of the crew perishing in a mission with millions of variables. Reviewers have commented that reading the book is like watching a movie, and I found that to be absolutely true. The author creates deep context with the events of 1968, culminating in the flight that took place in December of our senior year. It is a quick read, and I learned a lot that I was fairly oblivious to when it actually occurred.

Hank Nelson sends this photo and wonders if it was the theme for our graduation train ride. Anyone have a clear recollection?

Jim Wehrheim sends these two pictures, explaining that “The first photo is a large high school Confirmation Class with a tons of GBS kids who attended the Glenview Community Church. The second photo is from the Glenview Announcements showing a picture of some of our GBS classmates who attended "87 Club" at the Community Church when we were in 8th grade.”

[This] picture of our boys’ track team which was taken in the Spring before outdoor track practice started. The senior boys in the front row from left to right are Mark Maloney, Steve Scott, Jim Wehrheim, Bob Schmidt, Craig Swanson, Scott Sims, John Maschoff and Bill Nystrom.
The "Senior Boys Only" football picture was taken during our dreaded "Double Sessions" (Twice a day) football practices in the humid August heat two weeks before school started our senior year. I believe the photo was taken by Mr. Ed Baker the Drivers Ed Teacher for the Titan Fall Sports Program (Booklet) that they sold at sporting events.

Ron Lesaar (one of Rick’s younger brothers) visited the Chicago Museum of Broadcast Communications and took some pictures. Notice the patch on Frazier Thomas’s sleeve, just above the chevrons. It’s an Apollo 11 moon landing patch. He must have been a fan of the space program. Here’s a tribute to Thomas, which includes some Garfield Goose scenes. And here is an episode of Clutch Cargo (complete with Spinner and Paddlefoot) that you might have seen on The Little Theater Screen.
